Pruning Holly
We have a holly bush outside our front window. It is in a bit of a state as it had to grow up through the middle of a yew tree (which I cut back). As a result all the foliage is growing at the top and nothing is really growing in the middle. Do you have any suggestions on how to prune it in order for it to grow into a more 'rounded' shrub?

If I cut off the top, will this encourage it to grow side branches, or should I cut it to the ground?
Also, when is the best time to do this?
Thanks a mil

I'd leave it alone and see how those shoots further down develop.
That's great - thanks for the advice, we really don't want to get rid of it, but it would be nice if it looked a bit prettier.
I cut a mis-shapen holly right back to base and it regrew to a fine conical shape. The only thing you need to watch is cutting below a graft (if you have a grafted bush)
