Renovating neglected Chaenomeles

keepitlivekeepitlive Posts: 102

I have a Chaenomeles 'Moerloosei', that has been neglected for most of its lifeimage.

Many years ago (before I learned that remedial pruning on chaenomeles should be carried out over several years), I pruned it very hard, resulting in masses of long, thin shoots. New clumps of stems have appeared in front of the original plant. Since then, I have neglected it some more.imageimageimage.

I now want to reduce the number of main stems and train them on wires, spur-pruning the side shoots, but am concerned that my awful treatment has resulted in a shrub that is beyond hope.
