Hedge dying?

HI, wondered if anyone can shed some light on this please?

Leaves get covered in black spots and shrivel up. New leaves still come through but they are soon covered in marks. Something is eating them as well by the look of it.

Also a horrible stench but that might be the neighbourhood cats!

I have (hopefully) attached photos. Any help gratefully appreciated.

Very mucky! If that were mine I would cut all the manky stuff off, however low, it wont recover so cut right down and destroy. see if it comes through ok. I don't like sprays but maybe in this case a dose of something may help.

  • Thank you - yes Viburnum beetle looks like it. And thank you for the link - heading down to garden centre now to get some hard stuff on it, hopefully get them while still larvae. Also explains the smell, which I was blaming the local cats for!

We had the same on our Viburnam. you could literally hear the bugs eating away at the leaves- quite horrible!  We tried everything on it but it just looked and smelt awful. It was a warmish damp winter that started the rot - we had to get rid of all of it  and next doors too as there was no way it would recover. Very unsightly and smelly!

I wonder if these are more common now. I've had V. tinus for years and it's only 2 or 3 since the beetle turned up. It's only destroyed on bush now, the other not at all
