If you want the fruit, then yes. I'm not really a fan of Strawberries, so really planted mine for the birds. Nextdoor neighbour who takes no care of her weed filled garden was recently overheard moaning about all the wild strawberries sprouting through her pebbles
Squirrels too, but the little b*****s pull off all the green ones, find they are unripe and chuck them away; and so it goes on until they remove the lot.
How many plants do you have? If it's just a few, you could get some innexpensive decorative covers or else use a bit of recycled/reused material.. but if it's a whole long row, then a net would be best.
Just be careful how you net your strawbs, at this time of year young birds can get trapped under or caught up in loose netting. Make sure it's pulled taut, maybe stretched over a wooden frame or something.
Got 2 plastic bottles upturned on sticks about 12 inches off the soil down the middle of the plot to make it look like a tend / marquee with lots of pegs
? If pigeons get trapped do I release them or eat them.........just joking !!
Everyone is just trying to be Happy.....So lets help Them.
Unfortunately, have had to give up the alloment recently. Poorly mother and mother in law mean that we are unable to dedicate the time any more. Havent been up there to work on it since February when MIL went into hospital.
So we are going to give it a tidy, dismantle the raised beds and leave it in a suitable state. Hubby started to strim very overgrown paths yesterday and managed to pick a sizeable first crop of early strawbs. Sad, but cant really see a way around it or a foreseeable end to current situation.

Net or lose the lot!

I always net mine otherwise the local squirrels have a party!
I always net mine against blackbirds and squirrels. Doesn't stop the field voles burrowing up from underneath and taking big bites though.....
Just netted them all and saw a "troop " of
squirrels slope off
Thanks All
