The old 'RHS Encyclopaedia of Plants' lists by Spring/Summer/Autumn/Winter-All Year interest. Christopher Lloyds 'Succession Planting for Adventurous Gardeners' is a great read - and addresses your 'problem' perfectly. And many online sites like Crocus.co.uk let you search for plants by flowering month.
Have to second Dove's suggestion about hardy geraniums, they are great. 'Rozanne', 'Anne Thompson' and 'Patricia' are just three that will start in late May and just keep going until the winter weather arrives. http://www.saga.co.uk/lifestyle/gardening/q-and-a/hardy-geraniums.aspx

Wonky Womble - in case you are not aware I post on the forum all the year round as I have a wildlife friendly garden which has to have food for the bees and butterflies every month of the year so if you go to my thread called "My Bristol Garden in 2015" on the Forum you will see the flowers i have in bloom every month.
@Jo47 - Coffee and walnut cake! Yes please. Didn't manage to sit in the garden with my book as I spotted some more urgent things that needed doing but now I am in the chair, feet up and have an hour to myself before supper needs cooking.
Thank you Marion, I have often sneaked a peek at your thread, its so fresh and alive your garden! I hadn't thought to make notes of flowering times, but I have my trusty notebook and gardening diary at hand now so I will be taking notes!
Do you think with the demand for the book amazon will raise the price to 2p Jo?
The dates are on them all. If you want a whole year just look in my last year's posts called 2014 which was the year I was celebrating 50 years of gardening in my present garden so, if you want flowers for September this year have a look to see what was flowering in my garden last September or the gardens I visited in 2014 and sow or order the plants now.
