Phyllostachys aurea canes dying

KT53KT53 Posts: 9,012

I know there are those here who think that is a cause for rejoicing but I love the plant and have had no trouble with it trying to take over the world.  But to the point, many of the mature stems have started to die back.  The top of the stems have turned almost white whilst lower parts are still the proper golden colour and have leaves on them.

I know some stems will die off each year, they then make great wigwams for my beans, but this year the problem is much more severe.  Any thoughts on what might be causing the problem?  Our winter wasn't particularly severe and new stems are being produced.  Sadly it looks like I'll be left with 2 or 3 small clumps rather than the old stand of bamboo which was about 10' x 3'.

I wouldn't be rejoicing. Not the same species but mine look pretty rough at the top

Thanks nutcutlet.  It's certainly odd.  The bamboo has been there for about 20 years and the whole clump is normally green at this time of year.  It certainly doesn't look promising at the minute despite the new growth.
