Fine lawn seed or rye mix??

RitchieRitchie Posts: 36
Hi folks, quick question if anyone could help me make my mind up. Im looking to sow my front garden in grass seed, it wont have much traffic on it and looking for a mixture of fine seeds without using ryegrass for a neat looking lawn. I dont mind mowing every week and maintaining weeds when necessary however the question is, is it so much more so time consumming than a mixture with ryegrass through it and would it look untidy compaired to ryegrass mixture if not maintained properly?

Could agree more with Verdun.  One thing I would say is to get the best from you lawn is the right mower and that's a cylinder. Keep the blades sharp and mow regularly and you can never aerate it too much.

Thanks folks, so a good dwarf rye in the mix would be good enough with proper feeding and maintenance throughout the growing season.

I dont do any of that, I leave the clippings on the lawn after cutting as it is a natural fertaliser plus my grass always looks green as Verdun says, don't cut too short or you will have a brown lawnimage

. I cut the lawn once a fortnight with my trusty petrol lawn mower

What is not too short? My book says 1.25".

I'd say that's about right Leif - it also depends on the climate and the kind of mower you have - if I cut on the lowest setting on mine it's scalped.  We get a lot of rainfall so I cut on the mid setting on my  mower  every 5 or 6 days...if it's not raining...image

If it's yellow when you're cutting - it's too short! image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

I always use a box too. Otherwise there would be a lot of clumps of wet soggy clippings everywhere image

Thanks Fairygirl. I bought a Fiskars reel mower, and the clippings mulch the lawn. It cuts really nicely, and is almost pleasurable to use. The lawn is not yellow. Too many weeds though, mainly chick weeds, and coarse grass.
