sweet peas
Something is eating ,and completely removing, the flower heads of my sweet peas just as they are opening from bud.
Any ideas what this is and what can I do about it ?
Having nurtured them since last Autumn this is making me very cross !

Hello jo, by the sounds of it you have a slug problem maybe, either put some slug pellets down or some beer traps. Are they being trained up a wigwam?
Yes ... they are on a wigwam. About 4-5 ft high . No sign of slugs but I'll put some pellets down in case. I was wondering about mice or pidgeons.... what do you think ?
Do you have a problem with mice anywhere else in the garden, any mouse droppings? i could only think it would be slugs or snails as they will go anywhere to get anything to eat!
What's strange is that the long flower stems are completely unbent ,undamaged nor showing any signs of anything coming up the stem ....almost as if someone had walked past with a sharp pair of scissors ! I've been out and put down slug pellets. maybe I'll have to set up CCTV cameras !
sounds like you might need the CCTV clearly someone doesn't want you to grow sweet peas this year lol. lets hope you have some success with the slug pellets!!
Hi jo17. I lost a lot of mine a few years ago - pigeons and a couple of starling families pecked them off. Took me a couple of weeks to spot them though. First thing in the morning.
Ah ..Starlings . For the first time in ages we have a family that are hogging the bird table all the time with their fledglings. I bet it's them .
What were you able to do , if anything, to stop them ?
Suspect it is birds doing the damage jo17,given the chance they will do the same to red runner beans flowers.
Have now netted all my sweet peas which makes picking tricky and now rabbits have tunneled under my "rabbit -proof " fencing and have eaten all rocket and lettuce !The joys of gardening !
Oh dear, the joys of gardening I now ache now I mowed the lawn trimmed the box hedge planted out tomatoes, courgette, very leggy sunflowers and a cucamelon plant all in about 3 hours in very hot sun after work this afternoon! Safe to say I will hurt tomorrow!! But it will be worth it!
