pyracantha problems
Hi everyone, flippin cold outside but the rain has put a smile on my garden's face!!
I have 4 pyracanthas against two of my fences, all different and all growing well. They are all full of flowers buds but just one of them has a problem. The leaves on some of the growing tips have almost black smudges on them and a few have fallen off. Also some of the bunches of flower buds have started to turn black and don't look as if they will open into flowers. The flowers on the other pyracanthas look really happy and there is no problem with their leaves. Does anybody know what the problem is, please? I would hate to lose this plant as it is almost 10 feet wide now and grown mainly for the winter berries for the birds (also to stop four legged intruders walking along the fence!).
I would be grateful if anyone can suggest a way of treating this problem if it's not too late.
Thanks.

They are subject to fire blight. Have a look at some images on the web and see if they resemble yours

Wow, that was quick! Thanks nutcutlet, will have a look.
I rescued a sad looking pyracantha from the GC about 18 months ago - same problem. I pruned all the bits off and removed them from around the plant. It's survived although it's not great, but it's in beside my hedging so I'm not worried if it doesn't do very well. I've kept an eye on it and it seems ok this year.
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Hi nutcutlet, I looked at some images of fire blight and am sure you are right. My pyracantha looks as if the problem is quite early stage so will be out with the secateurs as soon as weather permits and see if I can hopefully clear the problem before it gets too serious. Thanks for getting back to me.
And Fairygirl, I hope your plant continues to flourish. I'm sure the pyracantha and your hedgehog make a lovely couple!!?? (prickles all round).
Happy gardening!
