The majority of seed-mixtures for general purpose lawns contain a fair proportion of ryegrass. It shouldn't be a problem.

i realise it's not a major problem but we would like to try and reduce the amount, just don't know how as we are new to gardening.
You'd have to start again with a specialist turf or seed.
What's the problem with the ryegrass - it's in most lawns? You shouldn't even be able to see the rye-grass unless it flowers.

Is rye grass bad? There is nothing that will kill one grass without killing all the others. How do you know which ones are rye grass, they don't usually get to form flower heads in a lawn.

Are you sure that it's rye grass that's causing the problem?
There are other 'weed type' grasses that form clumps or look different from the lawn grasses, details here

However, with most of them regular mowing, at least once a week, sometimes twice, will minimise their impact.

Thanks for all of the comments, looks like short of replacing the turf, there isn't much we can do about the Rye!!
No it's defiantly Rye. I guess we will learn to love it, just wasn't what we wanted that's all. Thanks again!!!
