Covering unwanted plants in black plastic

Hello, as per my post in the 'problems' forum that some may have seen, I have a plant (possibly weed or an out-of-control phlox) which is spreading very rapidly all over the garden at my new house (I moved in in March). I want at the very least to reduce the amount of it (if phlox) or get rid of it completely (if a weed). I have sprayed some of it with weedkiller but it is difficult to do this without getting the weedkiller on the other plants as the rogue plant has infiltrated everything. I have read in a couple of places about covering unwanted plants in black plastic until they die, is this an accepted way of getting rid of unwanted plants and are there any ways of doing this that people would recommend? Do you have to use special plastic or just bin liners? Hold it down with stones or stake it in place? Thanks very much.

You can mulch weedy areas with cardboard or a weed suppressant membrane but dealing with individual plants would be difficult.

Can you post a picture of the weed so we know what you are battling against?

hi, I suggest cutting the plants down as far as poss to soil level, as any green leaf would aid photosynthesis. could you then dig out the plant and remaining roots, or cover with weed suppressing plastic, or old carpet,

it would be interesting to see what others say.
