Help moldy mulch

over the weekend I planted my beautiful heirloom tomato plants used organic garden soil and organic compost plus  dried chicken manure I put cocoa mulch around them it has rained off and on through the week. today I woke up to find mold all the way through the cocoa mulch I cleared out as much of the mulch as I could and sprayed the plants and surrounding soil with an organic fungicide what else can/should I do?   It did not seem to be on the plants as yet.  This only occurred in the areas where I had the Cocoa mulch, not in any uncovered areas of the bed or in beds or planters without cocoa mulch. I used the same soil prep in all places. How did this happen? Please help

  • Nothing to worry about, the mold is harmless, just happens when fresh cocoa mulch gets damp and stays damp. Should ease off when it begins to break down.

Phew I cleared it out and put it in the mulch pile before I posted oh well a little early morning exercise. I think I will stick with hay -- will that mold as well?

  • Pretty much anything that isn't fully composted will be subject to mold as it breaks down. Just keep it clear of the plant stems and they should be fine.
