Why has my alium stalks turned white?

The stalks of purple sensation are white? First time I've seen this. Any idea?

    Well I only put them in this year? not sure.

    Alliums don't need dividing, just thinning if they self seed too much.

    The leaves wither and dieback about the same time as the flowers show, their work is done for another year, they can look tatty.

    Otherwise check for slug and snail damage. Allium stalks  can be stripped white, obviously the leaves will get butchered as well and some of the flowerheads.
