Finished tulips

Having dead-headed some 800 tulips inside the box hedges the next step is to plant the summer bedding. How long do I wait for the tulip stems/foliage to die back. Do I cut it all off at ground level and plant to one side, or pull it out and plant over ?

If you want the best chance of the tulips coming back and flowering again next year then you need to let everything die back naturally at which point the leaves will pull away easily.  Having said that many of the 'fancy' tulips don't come back well no matter how you treat them - they are often used as annuals and bulbs replaced each year.  Do you know what type(s) they are John?

Usually tulips can be dug up and keep the largest one for next year it will be smaller than the ones you buy but they will flower.By the time you have to put bedding in its time to dig them up. But if tulips are planted a bit deeper the bedding can be planted around them so can be left as long as you remember where they are.
