It's new and currently quite fierce, so I plan to put a couple of pebbles in climbing up the sides but wonder if I could also put a small aquatic plant or two in ? Thanks in anticipation

You have nothing to lose - apart from a couple of plants! Go ahead and try it - you never know! Apart from water lilies who don't much like running water.
I have a Belfast sink as a small pond.
we got an oxygenator plant for £2.50 and a water mint which iirc was £4.50 so not a big risk.
sadly no creatures seem to have found it yet but we live in hope lol
