miniture roses
Good afternoon. My wife bought a potted rose in bloom at Christmas form a supermarket which I re-potted after flowering in around February after cutting the plants (4 in the pot) back quite hard.
I have kept these moist and they have made lovely new growth and are just about to flower again. I would like to divide these roses and plant them out in a patio planting box. Any advice on this would be welcome in particular is this the right time to divide them and are they going to be hardy enough to survive a winter in NW Surrey. Many thanks John

It's the wrong time of year to move roses John. IF and I mean if you can seperate them without too much disturbance to the rootballs replant using rootgrow and bonemeal with FYM to the planting holes. I don't know the varieties you've got, they were without doubt greenhouse grown to flower at christmas, they may even have been grown abroad, so hardiness will be questionable. Surrey, hardly fierce winters, but most roses are tough. Keep them well watered, a good drench once a week. You may lose some of the new growth, so tlc is the answer.
i bought a £1 miniature rose too in a pot and i planted it straight outside as i'm not keen on houseplants and it's planted in a cast iron drain hopper (only small) and it's fine even though it hasn't had much rain on it, it's just about to flower
Thanks Dave and others for comments. I think you are probably right about them been grown in a greenhouse abroad to flower at Xmas, they are at present (4) in a 6 inch pot on a saucer outside, to which I add water every day or as needed. I will probably leave division until Oct/Nov then plant out in patio planters but will place in cold greenhouse out of the wind etc. then place outside next spring after a good prune again. All in all a couple of quid on 4 miniature roses that will bloom at least twice was good value for money.
We used loads of mini roses for table centres at our wedding last July. Afterwards we planted a lot in the garden they have all come up this year much stronger than last year. They take a while to acclimatise but yours should be ok outside.
