Why does my clematis do this?

I love my clematis Crystal Fountain, bought three years ago - but it is still producing a mass of lovely blooms near the ground, with just one or two five foot ascending stems, usually with one flower on top later in the season. I thought it was just an oddity the first year... but am now quite disappointed that it isn't doing what I hoped. Does anyone have any ideas?

It's not a clematis I know, but the British Clematis Society website says that it flowers at this time of year on old growth and later in the year on new growth, so it's behaving as it should, but you say the later growth is sparse. http://www.britishclematis.org.uk/plantprofiles/crystalfountain.htm
Do you feed it enough? Clematis are very hungry feeders, and this clematis produces large flowers. I would feed this type of clematis with special Clematis food every three/four weeks from March to September - hopefully this way it'll have enough energy to give you a really good display later in the year as well as early on.

Thank you so much for your helpful comments, Dove from Above. I shall certainly take your advice about specific clematis feeding. I am also wondering whether I am perhaps pruning too harshly...but I have a clematis Rebecca on the same wall (also a Group 2) and it flowers well at all heights....
