Seed sowing.

I would be interested to know of anyone who uses those seed sowing devices. I guess there are a number of types, and one presumes, quality. I noticed recently, an advert in D. T. Browns catalogue one priced at over £12. I am sure it is advisable to chose one that can cope with various seed sizes. Would welcome any thoughts from anyone who has used these seemingly handy gadgets.

Preparing the ground is the bit that takes the time and effort. Actually sowing the seed is very satisfying and only takes minutes, unless you're growing on a commercial scale.

I've got one but never use it. Would maybe be good if you sow lots in modules. I find I can do most seed reasonably well and quicker without it. It might be ok for tiny seed but I can never see whether it has picked it up or put it down! At least mixed with a bit of silver sand I can tell where they are and also know I've got every last one out of the packet.

  • I use a seeding device - a piece of folded cardboard (business card) and a pencil. Works fine for cucurbs down to artemesia.
