Figwort? (The second one). A plant I associate with canalsides etc.
Helianthus sounds about right for the first one, not that I'd have been able to guess myself.
WillDB: you are right, but we don't have a canal! I've had a search around and I've confirmed mine is the common figwort (Scrophularia nodosa).
