Had this plant for a while but it's never flowered before, I have always assumed it's a weed.

We are a clever lot, but I dont think many will identify without a piccy, having said that, someone did just that a while ago!

I was wondering if it was an aquilegia, I've eyed them up many a time in national trust shops and now they've turned up by themselves! Do they self seed readily? Sorry for the pic delay, the pic was on my phone and I couldn't seem to upload it from there.

Yes, they do seed themselves readily.  That is not the native one (Aquilegia vulgaris) and looks like it has some of the 'barlow' genes.  You can never tell what the offspring will be like but are often closer to the native one than the parent as they cross-pollinate so much.   Lots of fun to be had in crossing them. image

image That's the bed that needs more perennials too. I wonder why they've not flowered the past 2 years, my weeding's not that efficient!

Once the seed heads open you can just sprinkle them over the area - the seedings are quite distinctive so you will easily spot them (in fact there is one near the bottom of the photo.) image

Yes, the rest of our patio weeds are geraniums and geums for the most part...
