Broad beans - should they look like this?

TootlesTootles Posts: 1,469

Good  morning

First time growing broad beans. Just a couple of rows at the front of a raised bed. Should they look like this? Sort of knarly and a bit twisted? How frequently should they be watered?  Any tips? Thanks.

Sorry, don't think that is normal - at least mine aren't like that. Have you let them dry out?

I've watered them every other day and when i dig under the surface the soil is warm and damp. They do look a bit weird but having never grown them before I don't know what to expect. Are yours more straight?

Mine aren't like that, they're all straight. If they're not dried out, I dont know what it can be. Sorry not to be more helpful.

Did you sow them there or have they been grown in pots and planted out?

Mine grew up for 5 inches and then turned down and now grown up again

I sowed mine in small pots and then planted out

They have flowers on the stems so it should be OK for beans

Did you add any manure to that bed recently?

Mine did that, they are going upright now, I wouldnt worry. They will shoot out from the bottom soon or maybe have already.

I wonder if they are just sitting on the grass or did you dig deep, there isnt much soil in those boxes.

I planted them from seed in the greenhouse and then hardened them off before planting out.

Yep, dug in some manure in January. Do you think the soil could be too rich?

The beds have been dug down quite deep so are deeper than they look on the photo.

i didn't put any stakes by them until a few days ago as I watched a clip on YouTube and it suggested that leaving them to blow about a bit makes them a stronger plant. Maybe that hasn't helped.

Gave them a really good water today. One or two signs of flowers.
