Planting Lilies - when?

I've received several lily bulbs in the post as a freebie. I thought it was much too late to plant them, but I've put some in pots and the rest in the ground.

Are they likely to grow and would they flower this year?

And about 5 weeks ago I planted out some tiger lily/ martagon type bulbs in different places in the garden. I used grit and compost, fed them, watered them in. Not a single shoot! What is likely to have happened to them and  how can I do better next year?

I think they'll be fine - the ones in the ground are getting their roots down, and of course, it has been a bit chilly - they'll get going when the weather warms up.

    What do others think?

I think you are right DFA.  Once roots are down, bulbs romp away in the warmth And strong light.
