I feel like I should know what this is...image I sowed some sort of mixed cottage or bee type seeds in the area last year but it's possible these are just some mad weeds.

Just wondering if I need to thin out or have a massive weeding sessionimage

    Nipplewort (Lapsana communis) I think.

That fits with the leaf shape - my weed book only had a drawing of half the leaf...

    Thanks Bobimage

Fascinating to read how come it is called nipplewort, and that although very common, few people can name it.   Thanks for that info., Bob.

I can never remember that name. I couldn't remember it yesterday though it was named on the forum a few days ago.

I'll have to check out the origins, maybe that will help.

Or maybe I can remember Lapsana communis more readilyimage

Thanks for that. It has invaded part of my veggie garden and I didn't know what it was, although it is common.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • Nightmare weed -let it seed just once and you'll have it forever.  It seems to emerge and grow very fast and needs digging out the moment you spot it.

Having said that, providing it's not flowering |I add it to the compost bin.

I dug up about 200 decent sized nippleworts, not very easy as I was trying to keep various poppies and not snap some alliums. I'll get the rest when they get bigger.

Kept a few to see if the buds really do look like nipplesimage

It's one of the (many!) common weeds in my garden, so I spent some time identifying them all once.  Know your enemy is one of my mottos, especially after I once grew 'strawberry sticks' (Chenopodium capitatum) and, the next year, thought they had seeded themselves so let it grow.  Big mistake as what was growing was Fat Hen (Chenopodium album) and I've been plagued with it ever since!

BTW, strawberry sticks taste of very little - waste of time IMHO!
