found my clematis but doesn't look good

Years ago I planted a clematis, this was when I knew nothing as opposed to knowing a little now. I forgot about it as nothing came of it. However, it started growing shoots and got to a foot and a half. It was getting choked with the last (hopefully) bit of bind weed so I thought it best that I moved it as it was only way of clearing the weed from the root. The position was terrible also, no sun at all!
Anyway, the point being when I dug it up, it came away easily and there was no soil attached, no root ball, just dangling stragley roots. I dug a deep hole, put compost and muck in heeled in well and staked it then watered well. It looks terribly floppy! I did only do this this afternoon but I'm impatient and want to know if it stands a chance! Don't even remember what type it was!
Am I wasting my time folks?

Nothing ventured, nothing gained my dear Wonky ... and remember, plants want to live, they don't want to die if they can help it, so it's on your side.
What you've got to have now is patience
