Magpie Burying Nuts

NewBoy2NewBoy2 Posts: 1,813

I threw out some unsalted assorted nuts and noticed a magpie eating about 3 or 4 and them burying the same number individually a few feet away in the lawn and then again in the vegetable patch

This lasted about 15 minutes

? Is this usual friends

Yes, magpies, jays and other members of the crow family bury food - and sometimes remember where they put it image

Pansy that used to happen frequently in one of my old gardens, the squirrel and the magpie used to fight like cat and dog.

Me neither but it was always very entertaining to watch.

The magpie was interrupted by one of the 2 foxes that visit my garden to eat the sultanas that I put out for the black birds

A squirrel has appeared in the last 2 days as well

I watched a magpie burying acorns in the Autumn then it went into a nearby tree and seemed to be imprinting on it's memory where it had put them as it was looking down at the site then looking back into the tree.

I read that a lot of oak trees are planted by magpies that forgot where they had planted the acorns.

pansyface - re magpie burying nuts - I once watched a squirrel and a magpie do exactly the same - but the opposite way round! image
