ideas for pots in a playgroup setting
I work in a playgroup with 3 and 4 year olds.
We have a dozen multicoloured rectangle and the same in plastic terracotta style various sizes which were planted last autumn with bulbs of circuses irises tulips and daffodils but now in May they have all died back to leaves and I want to replant them.
I want more than annuals, more longer lasting plants that wi spread and cover the pots over the summer and into autumn.
We only will be with the children another month so vegetables probably not work.
Obviously budget will be another consideration.
Any suggestions please.

Herbs might be fun. They smell lovely, the flowers can attract bees, and they aren't poisonous. Chives can be nibbled straight off the plant. You can mix in pansies and nasturtiums for colour.....suggest you buy young plants rather than getting seeds.
Thanks yes have been reading up on herbs. We won a competition a few years ago and won a lavender plant which is still going strong. We have mimulus in a large planter which has self seeded and keeps spreading so might look for these again. Nasturtium would be good for colour and could hang from pots giving a lovely colour. We have a lovely clematis growing against our shed which I love too. Might try some sweet pea beside this and maybe sunflowers.
There are many different types of mint, all with wonderful scent, like eau de cologne and mint chocolate besides the usual spearmint, moroccan mint and apple mint. Thyme comes in many guises such as creeping (my favourite and it smells gorgeous) and variegated types.
They are tough plants that can withstand the depredations of tiny hands and can teach them about the many insects that inhabit our gardens in summer. Planted in amongst your flowering plants, they will cover the compost and add the necessary green background.
Good luck with your nursery garden. Hope the kids appreciate your efforts (though I wouldn't bank on it).
