Clematis help

I'm not a gardener by any stretch of the imagination so bear with me please. We have a couple of clenatis growing on our fence, no idea of type unfortunately. My question is how do i keep it neat and in check? I don't think it's flowered that well either for a good few years. Any advice much appreciated. Cheers Jason

Feed them.   They are very hungry, thirsty plants so you need to give them a generous dollop of slow release specialist clematis food every spring and occasional liquid feeds with rose or tomato fertiliser from spring to flowering time.

Different clematis have different pruning regimes which keep the tidy and also help promote fresh growth and flowering vigour.  Do you know the varieties or when they flower?

    Hi

As a general rule those Clematis that flower in the early part of the year (approx up to June) need pruning immediately after flowering as they produce flowers on the wood made the previous year, so if pruned now will make new growth which will flower next year. Those that flower later in the year (after June) can be pruned back in early Spring/late Winter as they will flower on the new growth produced that year. There are exceptions though. I`d wait and see if it can be identified from flowers before tackling it, though the worst that is likely to happen is that if you hard prune now you will lose a years flowers. As obelixx says feed it well especially after pruning. Good luck!
