We used to get a woodpecker in our garden when we lived in the country. He really used to hog the peanuts and chase all the other birds away till he'd had his fill.
OL-Orchid Lady, how wonderful for you. Try putting up a fatball as well. Our woodpeckers absolutely love the home-made mixture in coconut shells.
For the first time I have seen the woodpeckers working on the lawn here, never seen it before. So busy they are! If that's ants they are eating, welcome, and carry on!
Thanks everyone and sorry for the delay coming back on. I haven't seen him again yet but then I haven't been at home, the feeder is always kept full now with seeds, fatballs and the peanut feeder, I'm also going to get one of those square suet things to hang on it...........it has to be one of the best presents my mum has ever bought me
No birds on the feeder this morning though, they seem to be more interested in collecting bits from around my greenhouse and veg patch......probably on strawberry hunt so I'd better get my netting sorted
I've had green woodpeckers. Red legged partridge are my favourite. I had to stop my car recently, to let one cross the road, just outside my house. A sparrowhawk visits to snack on sparrows and pidgeons.
Showing off too, although not a very clear photo. Two years ago an electricy pole had to be replaced at the bottom of our field because woodpeckers had bored nest holes in it. There are plenty of trees around so I don't know why they chose that.
6.30 am today and a beautiful sunny morning, watching the birds on the feeders while drinking my coffee. Lots of babies, sparrows, blackbirds, doves, green and gold finches etc and THEN...... a baby woodpecker being fed by parent from my insect block and coconut halves. I watched entranced for several minutes until parent decided enough was enough. Can't believe my luck.
I too share your pleasures at seeing the birds .we have woodpecker s visiting.also new last year was a couple of jays watched then, burying acorns in the lawn.this year it was Mr and Mrs wagtail bringing their babies' !

I get a great spotted woodpecker, but they only like the pink fat blocks. fussy or what?
Also last year one was working a corner in the lawn. No ants there, we thought they were after worms for the babies.
OL how lucky you are we had a Woody red legs attacking our copse trees last year but they haven't seen or heard one this year
not yet anyway.

Yes, green woodpeckers tend to visit gardens very early in the mornings, before most have even got out of bed
Nice video.
