Shy raspberries

LeifUKLeifUK Posts: 573

I planted 5 bare root Polka raspberry canes in late winter. Only two are shooting, one appearing a week or two ago. Should I be worrying about the other 3? They are in a heavy clay soil, lightened with a couple of large bags of compost. Currants, plums, medlar, rhubarb, summer raspberries are all doing well in the same soil.

Hi LeifUK, I planted some All Gold end of last year they are just starting to show signs of life now. Being new to it all I'm thinking they are just making root and not expecting any fruit this year!

Thanks RD, looks like no need to worry just yet. I didn't expect much in the way of fruit this year anyway. My Glen Coe took a year or so to get going.

What can happen is the top growth dies (esp in bare root plants) and new growth come up from the roots further away. This may take till next year.

You really should think about barriers to their roots. I planted various varieties a few years ago and this year new Raspberry plants came up several metres away in other borders. People think Bamboo is bad but Raspberry and Blackberry are worse. Strawberries spread like mad but at least they are easy to spot and move.

I agree with Blairs - the autumn fruiting raspberries seem worse re 'spreading' than any summer varieties I've known before.  Dig in some sort of barrier. image
