Clematis changed colour

I took some soft stem cuttings of my clematis montana a couple of years ago, the mother plant is pink and I planted 2 of the baby plants in my own garden which also flowered in pink, however I gave a plant to my son for his garden and it has white flowers. . Any ideas why this happened?

I've heard that the pink montana varieties can lose their colour if they're in a shady spot--could that be it?
The original plant died and loving son replaced it
