Fruit Trees Manchester

Hi everyone,

Can you advise of fruit trees that would happily grow and fruit in the Northwest of England.

Self pollinating, also I already have cooking apple, damson and cherry.

Thanks

If you have a south or south west facing wall and good drainage then a Fig will succeed on the wall. Quite a lot of Plum varieties can be grown around here. Judging by the huge Pear trees I have seen near old farms there are also varieties of Pear that will succeeed, but you will probably have to seek out some older local varieties rather than the ones offered normally.

Thanks, I'm not South facing but there should be good light during the day. I was wondering if there might be a hardy clementine or none cooking Apple tree that wouldn't mind the northwest climate.

There are certainly dessert Apples that will fruit here, there are varieties that will produce fruit much further north in Scotland. Some local councils in Greater Manchester have planted orchards with many older varieties of apple to see how they perform, an example is at Reddish vale. I don't think any Citrus are hardy up here, even in Cornwall I think they are limited in what kinds will grow outside. You could grow a clementine in a conservatory.

Thanks for the info, I actually live 20mins from Reddish Vale so I went with desert apples and got myself a new tree. I have also been looking at plums but again not sure how well they would do.

  • A garden centre at Walsden near Todmorden called Gordon Riggs have a small selection of old local variety fruit trees grafted by a charity.
