I dug over a completely overgrown 120ft long garden when I was in my twenties and my neighbours didn't seem surprised about it. Seeing me in the garden at 9pm one summer evening one of them did ask what time I finished in the evenings ("When it gets dark" was my reply).
The neighbour on the other side did get concerned when I was digging a pond while pregnant with my first child (but not as worried as she got when she saw me perched on a step ladder painting the ceiling).
Thinking back I was much harder working in those days - but it was a long time ago and there was no GW forum (indeed no internet) to distract me!
I'm clinging on to my thirties by months by yes I find younger gardeners are defiantly a novelty especially in towns and cities! Apparently my fingernails are supposed to be pink and plastic and pointy, not brown, earthy and chipped!?! Guess I'm reading the wrong magazines! I have a great arrangement with Dove, my muscles for her experience! I help with the heavy graft and she teaches me as we go along! helps us both!
I'm just about to turn 28 and in March I managed to buy my first house, having always rented previously.
I've spent a good few hours in the front garden as it's a decent size and I do get a lot of neighbours coming to speak to me (most of which are a lot older), mostly they're very encouraging though, I think they're relieved I'm not going to just let the place go wild.
I met more of the street while clipping the front hedge than I did the rest of the time I've lived here so far!
Am also clinging onto my 30s by a few months (!) but have been gardening for 4 years now. I don't think my neighbours (mostly elderly) are particularly surprised that I'm out in my front garden a lot but they are often surprised by my passion for it!
I spend most of the day thinking about what needs doing in the garden when I get home from work - it is truly a bug but 10 yrs ago I would have if I thought I'd be obsessed by gardening!

1930's you mean?!!
I hate doing the front, it doesnt matter what age you are, they still have to look. Then there's the tractor/white van men. No much rather be inside.
