Neglected Garden Covered In Weeds

Hi

I moved in to a rented property 3 years ago, the garden was very neglected and covered in rubbish, glass etc, we spent the first summer clearing it. The following summer and last summer I spent in hospital and so basically it has not had anything done with it (apart from some basic weeding)

This year it is like a jungle, with weeds as high as my shoulders, and it is such a large area. I am on my own with a baby (hubby abroad) and work full time on a low wage and honestly do not know where to start with it. I know a professional gardener will charge more than I can afford..

Due to having lots of operations over the last couple of years, I know I will find bending difficult and so the prospect of spending days and hours weeding is stressing me out, but know it has to be done.

First of all I would like to know if there are any tools that will help with weeding that are good, and may reduce the need for putting too much pressure on my back. Also what tips do you have on getting the garden under control? Someone at work mentioned once the weeds are out, I will need to rotavate the soil, and then put grass seeds down, but rotavating might be too heavy for me. Another friend has mentioned once the weeds are gone, then buying turf and putting it down to avoid the need for rotavating. Honestly I am at a loss, and the garden is really depressing me. I would love a garden for my 20 month old to play in one day. It is a fairly large garden. But no grass at all as the one side that had it is just mush and weeds.

Thanks in advance

Thanks Pauline. It is privately rented and we have asked the landlord but he is not willing to help. Really in hindsight we should have refused to move in it, until he sorted the garden out, but I think we were so happy with the rest of the house, we didn't realise the extent of the garden problems until it was too late. x

    What about a garden share?

if you would permit someone with no garden to use some of your space for growing veg etc, they may help sort out the mess?
