New Garden Project

Good afternoon all,

Hope you are well. image

I am new to the site and in need of some help with a new project.

The garden is question is kind of a blank canvas really but I can see lots of potential to make a nice little garden with.

If you take a nosey at the pictures you can get an idea of the kind of thing I am looking to do.

Firstly, the small wall that runs along the centre of the garden is to be pushed back so there is like a foot and a half to two feet going along the back. This will be used to have some plants that drape down to cover the wall. Maybe some small trees also so that whole back area will be a line of colour.

Then I plan to grass the whole area in front of it so there will be a nice lawn to lay out on. I'm contemplating some decking over by the left hand side wall that will run from the house to that wall that is being pushed back. This isn't a definate idea though.

I'm also looking for an idea of what plants and small trees would look good along that back wall.

The whole idea behind it is to make a nice little garden with a nice lawn and then then the whole area be secluded in flowers and trees around the whole garden to bring it in.

Thats what I have come up with up to now but any other help would be much appreciated. image

Thanks in advanced. image

    Hi Carlos and welcome image

What an exciting project!  Can you tell us which way the garden faces please?  Which areas get the most sun/shade etc.  Have you any idea what the soil is like under that paving?

  • Hi,

Thanks for the fast response and the welcome. image

I've not moved into the house yet as it's currently like a building site inside with lots of work going on.

However I have spoken with the neighbour and he has told me the garden gets sunlight pretty much the whole day. The sun starts on the left and works its way around to the right throughout the day. The sun faces the house during the course of the day. I think maybe the top area where the fence is may get some shade but not much.

No idea with regards to soil etc as not started to do any work on it as of yet.

  • So you think a greenhouse over the left hand side of the garden would be better Edd?

Yeah I am thinking that the soil I take out from behind that wall I am going to push back I could use to fill the gap in that you see between the house and the start of that first tier.

My only concern with this is that the pipework for the drains etc will be there so not sure if I could do that or not.

    And will do Pauline image

  • Well we have had the kitchen in the house moved to the other side of the house so as it stands now the drain runs along the back of the house to where that picture is taken.

It's been dug into the ground where that gap is.

I guess covering it with soil it's a bad idea anyways. Just means more digging if there is a problem with them.

Don't fill that bottom gap with soil - you'll breach your damp proof course and cause damp in the house!

  • Thanks for the info Dove. I wonder if thats why that gap is there. Will leave as it then and just start the garden where the wall starts.

  • This is how the back of the house looks with the changes made.

We have put some french doors in the back so I'm going to be taking out a part of that first wall to allow the doors to open up.

Your plot reminds me of the viewers garden Chris Beardshaw is working on in the Beechgrove Garden series. Look for episode 6, about 6 minutes in to see what they have done.

  • Hi Steephill,

Just on this link at the moment. Do you know which year it was on:

    Thanks

  • Thanks for the info guys.

Just had a nosey at the clip. I like the idea of a supporting wall similar to the one on the clip. Will look to do some kind of wall like the one in the clip when I move that middle wall backwards. Will look a lot nicer also than the concrete wall you see there.
