Weird one for me - help needed

Lorna95Lorna95 Posts: 436

Hi everyone, today i have been cleaning out some pots that had old plants in them, well one of the pots i cleaned out didn't seem to have anything flower in it for a few years, so i thought i could get rid of the stuff in it and as i was getting rid of the old compost there was a clump of bulb type things. Now nothing has flowered for years in this pot so i have no clue what it is. I brushed most of the dirt off and tried separating it, i didn't need to snap it to get it so separate, i just wiggled it and the roots easily come away. i got my husband to take some photo's while i was potting up, but he didn't get a good photo of the bulb, to me the colour of the bulb thing looks like the colour of salad potatoes, but i never put potatoes in a pot and even if i did surely they would have rotted away as i have not put anything in this pot for a long long time. As you can see from the photo, it had started to sprout, but like i said i haven't had anything from it for years, the pot had been moved about in the garden a few time though.

Any help would be fantastic, but i think this may be a hard one, hope someone can help.image

Do you have many bluebells in your garden?  I ask because I have had them grow up through the bottom of pots and the stem swells and forms a bulb.  It seems like they can form bulbs at their own preferred depth if deeply buried or too near the surface.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Hi Bob, No i don't have any bluebells in the garden, and i don't think i have ever seen any in the area. they seem very strange to me, they are not round like the normal shape of a bulb.

I suppose if nobody knows what they are, then i will find out eventually as they are sprouting, image

How interesting!  Have you potted them up?  You could run a sweepstake! image

    My guess is Crocosmia image

Hi Dovefromabove, I don't know what a sweepstake is, but i'm guessing people guess what the plant will be, sounds like fun, yes i potted them up as soon as i see they were in the pot, i never thought there would be anything in there as not seeing anything grow for years,

If i did the sweepstake, do i make a new thread and what section do i put it in, i take it, that it would still come under the plant section,  sorry for the questions, i'm new to posting here. image

Sorry, the sweepstake suggestion was a sort of a joke image but it'll be fun to see if anyone gets it right - no need to do a separate thread - this one will do. image

An aroid of some sort is a possibility. One of the later emerging ones. Ever had arisaema or anything like that?

nutcutlet, i just searched aroid as i didn't know what they were, it shows a bulb/tuber which looks the same. nope i have never had a arisaema, but i have had a arum italicum or somethink that looks similar, not sure if they are closely related.
going to be interesting to find out what it is.image
