When do 'forget me nots' go to seed?

Chris MasonChris Mason Posts: 159

What month do they go to seed or how do I know when they go to seed?

I know I can buy them but, I've got loads in my garden, I want to 'harvest' them and spread them else where

I think they go to seed as the flowers die but mine spread themselves everywhere without any help from me.  I transplant some of the new babies to where I want them but I've just been digging most of them up these last few days and throwing them away.

Thanks, I'll make a point of digging a few up then and planting them in a more practical place

ive got some teeny forget me not seedlings i have sown and they are in a shallow tray outside, if i plant them when will they grow, this year or next? they are about 1 millimetre high st the mo.

  • Sanjy - you may get flowers if the weather warms up a bit brrr.  I'm in north west and mine are in full flower but they've been in for about 5 years. After flowering every year i just pull up the ones in the areas there are too many and shake the bunch in parts of the garden there aren't many. But they blooming self seed everywhere anyway...in pots/hanging baskets/between flags. They are a bit of a weed in my garden. They seem to be the only thing the slugs/snails or aphids wont touch image

i'm in the south east so hopefully they will take, i actually thought id picked up cornflowers which is what i wanted but hey ho, if i sow cornflowers now will they grow & flower later this year or is it too late?

I don't think I'd move them now Chris, they might die before they seed. All energy is in seed making now with nothing left for root establishment. When they go dry, shake them where you want them next. Or transplant the seedlings when they come up. One plant left to seed should give you plentyimage

I don't think it's too late to sow cornflowers sanjy. They might be a bit late but they'll get there.

Sanjy67- keep the seeds moist and you'll be surprised how fast they will germinate, I sowed a load of seed (native grasses and native wild flowers) in a area of my garden, it's been 5 days and a lot of the seeds are just showing the first signs of life. - I'm in the south east as well

I wont move them then ;3
