Bamboo your thoughts- FARGESIA NITIDA/Asian wonder

Morning all!

I'm looking to pick your collective brain on bamboos.  I have an area round my patio which i'd like to screen off.  I love the look of bamboos and will do the job perfectly.  I've started doing my research and obviously need to avoid the 'running' types, however, i'm still finding horror stories of gardens being turned into jungles overnight even with the clumping types.

I've been thinking of fargesia nitida or fargesia asian wonder.  I would plant them in pots.  Should i believe the horror stories, or will my bamboo live quite happily in pots? i live in Glasgow if that helps.  Any experience or your thoughts are welcome.

Thanks in advnace for your time

I have Asian wonder and it is a thick screening variety that grows slowly outwards and does not send out massive runners like Sasa or pseudosasa.

thanks blairs - how long have you had it for.... thinking if it's quite new it might not have had the chance to demolish your house/eat your children like i've read about!!

Hi Natalie - I'm on the south side of Glasgow and have never had problems with the clumping types of bamboo. The clay soil seems to help contain them. I planted one in a previous garden - about 15 years ago. It never gave me any problems - grew quite slowly. The people across the back from me have a very large one which has been there about 10 years and it certainly hasn't become invasive. If you're concerned though, some hefty large containers will be fine or surround them with paving slabs inserted vertically round them below ground level  image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

I have had a few Bamboos over the past 12 years. Fargesia Asian wonder has just got very thick and well wall like. I hardly get any shedding. The tops get wind damage but apart from that they are uninvolved.
