Mystery flowers

CherylNTCherylNT Posts: 13

Hi all, i've got quite a lot of these flowers in my garden. They range in colour from white to pink to dark purple. Does anyone know what they are? My neighbour says they are weeds but they seem too pretty to be this. I'm keeping them regardless as I love the flowers.

Dont get rid of those, they are my favourite flowers, I grow loads from seed in all different colours.

Also known as Granny's bonnet.  Excellent cottage garden and border plant.   They do cross fertilise and self seed very happily and can tend to degenerate to a muddy pink as the years go by but they are definitely not weeds.

Thank you all! I really love them too. The flowers are so pretty and they give really good height. Lyn, how would you recommend growing these from seed? I would love to add more to the garden.

They will self seed very readily so just be careful when you're weeding that you don't hoe up the babies.    You can also take seed from the seed pods when they turn brown and sow it in trays of compost then prick it out into individual pots when big enough to handle by the leaves.

Fabulous! I'm going to try that. This is my first garden and I'm loving finding out what all the various plants are. So much fun image

I used to have a rule that I'd leave them to flower then decide which self seeders to remove if I didn't like them.

I never removed any until they seeded into the crowns of Hostas and sent their tap roots down and ended up having to attack them with glyphosate.

I'm a bit more ruthless these days about self seeders
