Talkback: How to sort self-sown poppies

The poppies are lovely, but appear to be palaver somniferum, an annual, not the perennial oriental poppies. Save seeds of desirable plants for the next season, of course, but the plants themselves won't live after setting seed. Also, I should think allowing the undesirable plants to pollenate the desirable plants will cause one to lose the preferred color.

Papaver somniferum will self seed happily and if you have the pinky, mauve ones, they will be the same next year. You can dry the stems and seed heads for use in dried flower arrangements.
