Plum Tree Leaf Curl??

bobloesbobloes Posts: 134

Hi All

I bought a limited growth plum tree about 4 years ago and last year for the first time it produced blossom but no fruit and the leaves started to curl and wither.  A new flush of leaves were then produced.  The same thing appears to be happening this year.  I have included some photos.  I believe it needs a prune but did not intend to do that until after fruiting this year.  Has anyone got an idea what is going on and how I deal with it?

Thanks  Bob

It's plum aphids to spray now use Bayer sprayday greenfly killer or to control pyrethrum,py spray garden kills don't spray when in blossom because of pollinators. In winter spray with growing success winter tree wash or vitax winter

tree wash on mild dry day.Or when in bud spray with Bayer provado ultimate bug killer. I've never used these so follow instructions.

Thanks very much for the responses.  As a consequence I was able to find 'plum aphids' on the RHS website.  I live near the sea in Weymouth so frosts are not normally a concern.  I cannot find any aphids but there are definite signs that something small has been eating the leaves.  The RHS website suggests that there should be no effect on yield so I will have to wait and see and then take the action recommended over the winter.  Thanks again.

I'm in west midlands with a small plum tree of same age and an identical problem. Loads of blossom this year and all the fruit have set but 95% of the leaves have curled and twisted. I have consulted 3 local garden centres and had 3 different suggestions. Aphids- none to see and no sticky residue or other signs. Frost damage- but the new leaves opening are still the same. Peach curl- which actually seems the most likely as some web sites suggest that the causal fungus has been known to also infect some prunus varieties.
