Pieris with brown edged leaves

I have a 8 year old pieris (not sure which flavour) which has been very happy with me until this year.  As you can see from the photos the new leaf growth is yellow (from the original beautiful scarlet) and over the last two weeks the leaves have started to brown from the tips.  I am pretty confident it has not dried out and I feed it as prescribed.  I believe the leaves have normally gone through a lighter period before darkening to green but I have never seen them this yellow.  Am I worrying over nothing or is this something else to turn me even greyer?  Thanks.

Hi bobloes. I see you have it in a pot so move it into a bit of shade. A combination of sun, wind and frost on the new growth is the most likely cause. Sun can bleach the foliage quite a lot. Have you repotted it at all, or at least taken out some of the compost/soil and replaced with fresh? It may be that there's more root than anything else in the pot so it would probably benefit from a bit of a lift. Anything in a pot requires a bit more attention than it would in the ground and Pieris are always much happier in the ground in dampish soil. image

I wish you could see the one along the road from me just now Verd. It's over 2 metres tall and covered in flaming scarlet/orange foliage. A real picture. We have the perfect conditions here for them. I may try and sneak a pic if I can image

Thanks both for your ideas.  I shall move it into shade forthwith.  I have been thinking about putting it in the ground for a couple of years but know that my soil is neutral hence was worried about how it would react.  Also have a problem with where to put it as it becomes quite large and my only spaces would be north facing.  Anyway thanks again.

As you were all so helpful I thought you might be interested in what has happened.  I lied - I did not move it into the shade - sorry.  However this picture does show that it appears to be recovering of it's own accord.  I got a second show of the red bracts (my word hope it is right) which replaced the browned leaves.  I promise it will go in the ground (lined or not) this winter.  Cheers.

  • They need acidic soil.   Might be time to repot or put a mulch on the top of ericaceous compost or well rotted manure to keep the soil acidic and also to help keep it damp.

Make sure it's well watered too.

Mine are direct into the ground and in an area where the ground is quite dampish and shaded... though the pieris is actually growing up into sun/partial sun.

Whoops sorry... I posted the above and then read on and saw your pieris is now feeling and looking much better.

Glad it returned to full healthimage
