How much water should I be watering Canna?

PerkiPerki Posts: 2,527

Hello It my first year growing cannas and I got my self confused on watering, I bought 3 originally. One started to rot so I assumed I have been over watering. I have cut the rotting bit off but I didnt think it would sprout so I bought another already growing. So after that I cut down on the watering, One of my other started to sprout but It looks like I not been watering enough now and the sprouting shoot dried out image it got another shoot coming through though.  My last Canna growing just fine it about 30cm high now.

I was watering dribs and drabs a bit like my dahlias but slightly a little more. I thought Canna were marginal plants as well but with the first one rotting it got me  image

Better to water thoroughly then leave till they're drying out again. Are they in pots undercover just now Perki? Make sure they're able to drain well too - keep them up off the ground.

They should be growing well at the moment - bit of feeding as well as watering - ready to put out soon when there's no danger of frost. Wind can do a bit of damage too so keep them sheltered when they go out, whether in the ground or still in pots.

Yes they are small, but for one which has out grown its pot, I just watered them. I be put them all in large pots/barrels. It still a little chill at night but I think I leave them in GH if I have place, they are in my potting tray at the moment GH is nearly full.

In warm weather and climates they are bog plants. The weather has been cool, esp at nights, so I would not overwater them and mine are all covered in cloches still.

Re the rotting one, if you have any hydrogen peroxide, if you dilute it and dip the Canna in it that normally stops the rot quickly.

I'd agree. As Verd has described earlier, pot on the smaller ones when they outgrow the pot they're in. Tiny ones like that will struggle so letting them get bigger will benefit them enormously. I wouldn't put small ones like that out up here just now - not overnight anyway - but it does depend on your own conditions and climate. We don't all live in tropical Cornwall Verd image

I'm in the Midlands and mine have been outside for two weeks. Growing well now. I'm keeping them fairly moist and have given them a feed of Tomato Food.
