Advice about fig

AshdaleAshdale Posts: 149

i have a new fig which I have had for a little while but because I havent decided it's final growing place, it's still in the pot.  I've become worried about it because it's the middle off May and it  looks like a brown twig with no life in it.  It has 2 small brownish buds but they have not changed their appearance in weeks. I have it indoors at the moment. Does it sound as if I should  be concerned Or is it going to spring into life at any moment?

Is it dry?  Although it needs free-draining compost and doesn't like to have wet feet, mine is quite thirsty at this time of year image

Yes, Dove, I have watered it little and often but kept it fairly dry.  I thought that was right but maybe not.  I will water a bit more now.  Does yours have leaves already?

This summer will be the third year I've had mine - it's a Brown Turkey.  It burst into leaf about a week ago - it's in a big pot (24"x24"x24"approx) outside in a sheltered corner of the terrace facing south-ish.  At the moment it's taking a watering can full every other day.

I've been growing figs for a few years and both the outdoor and greenhouse figs have had leaves for a while.....they are all in pots. It sounds as though your plant is dead as it should be showing some sign of bursting forth by now. Don't chuck it out just yet....it may be lazy......but prepare to buy a new one.

Thanks Dove and Ceres.  Given what you said I decided to ask advice from the Garden Centre that I bought the fig from and they exchanged it for one with leaves.  Result! Thanks.
