Advice Neede Please

AshdaleAshdale Posts: 149

I haven't grown autumn-sown shallots before but am trying them this year. The shallots look lovely and healthy but, to my horror yesterday, I found that some had produced flower buds which I believe means they are short of water.  I have been watering but obviously not enough.  Is that it for them now, or should I nip out the flower buds and leave them?  Will the bulbs stop swelling now?

Thanks Edd.  I will do that.  I'm hopeful that the bulbs will be quite developed as its nearly the end of May. Not all of them had budded so is there anything I can do now to stop the others from flowering?

Thanks so much Edd.  Much appreciated.  I will be planting one of your recommended varieties this  Autumn.  I really am a convert to autumn planting.  Thanks

Hi Edd can you tell me what causes them to bolt? I am also trying shallots this year for the first time and would like to avoid that if possible, thanks.

    Hi Edd

Thanks for your comprehensive answer to my question re bolting, fortunately my shallots are fine at present. They seem to have lots of separate bundles of leaves at the neck now which I am hoping is a sign that they are starting to form more bulbs? Love the picture of the watering cans on the steps, great idea! Cheers.

Thanks Edd, thats excellent news and I`m looking forward to harvesting them later in the year and cooking something yummy with them! Any tips on storing them?
