Oh, there aren't any nests in it but I have removed the brambles and ivy - the garden has been neglected for approx 14 years so that's what made me think it was a Cornus gone mad.
so if it's philadelphus then I've got a chance at rejuvenation. I'll start with a third of the oldest stems out next winter's end and carry that out for a couple of years and see how it goes. Thanks Team.
I had a philadelphus that had been left to go wild - not as bad as yours though Tetley! Once it's flowered you can start pruning them. It's amazing how quickly they grow back.

I agree ,as ever with nutcutlet: looks like philadelphus, Maybe kolwitizia but perhaps too upright.
If its philadelphus, it should be showing flower buds at the top, by now. If it doesnt flower this year, I'd have it out.
