what can be eating the leaves on my daughter's bay tree?

My daughter has a bay tree growing in a pot. She's noticed recently that all the leaves are being eaten, sometimes cut in half, by something or other. I've tried to google what it could be but haven't had any success. Could anyone advise what it's likely to be and how to stop it happening please?

Thanks in advance,

PP x

Unlikely as my daughter lives in central London! Definitely a bug of some sort x

  • Could it be vine weevil?

    is there a treatment?

  • It does sound like vine weevil.  If you use the bay leaves in cooking, I would avoid any kind of insecticide.  That really only leaves vine weevil nematodes which you apply to the soil.  These kill the grubs in the soil (which eat roots.)  The adults are mainly active at night so you may be able to catch them on the leaves by doing moonlight visits with a torch.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
