setting up a trug

Hi. I would like to know - 'if I use polystyrene chunks in the base of my trug to improve drainage, how much should I use in relation to the size of trug and amount of compost, for the best effect?

I wondered what that was Edd -a trug is usually one of those baskets for  collecting cut flowers or veg image

If you're worried about drainage, mix some grit with your compost/soil as well Sandy. It does depend on the type of veg or plants you intend putting in it though. As Edd says, these containers will drain well anyway. You just have to ensure that the drainage holes don't get blocked up with the compost. image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

Thanks for your reply Edd. Yes the trug is v shaped and is about 3ft deep and the top measurements are about 5ft x 3ft. We've left about 1/4" gap at either side of the bottom slat for drainage. The trouble we had with it originally was that the compost sank quite a lot and pushed the sides out so this time we've used much stronger wood. Also last time we used polystyrene chunks for extra drainage but I have wondered if maybe we used too much which is why I want to be more sure this time.image
