Is my Japanese maple dying?

RobmarstonRobmarston Posts: 338
Hi. I'm a bit worried about my acer palmatum 'blood good '. It's in a pot and I too dressed it earlier this year as normal. I have it in slightly acidic soil with good drainage and a mulch of one inch of gravel. It opened in leaf just fine to start with but I noticed quite a few of the branches have no leaf on them. Today I notice that many of the leaves that are there appear to be shrivelling up, hanging down then falling off. There are a number littered around the pot. Is this just normal and will it be ok? I love my acers, I have 5 but the blood good is rather special. Any help would be most appreciated. I keep it well watered too.

sun, wind, dryness of soil or a combination of: would be my guess.

Exactly my thoughts Hosta. Always hard at this time of year with changeable weather, but when they're in pots, at least they can be moved to give them a bit of protection.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

Do you think it'll be ok then? It looks fine apart from this.

I don't quite understand, you describe a plant that's dying and then you say it looks fine apart from this.

Is it well or is it ill?

At my Daughters for lunch yesterday she pointed out the same symptoms on her potted Acer, I told her frost damage. We have had clear skies which means cold temperatures and frost in our area. On examination there is new growth so leave it be and the plant will come back in time. Do not over water, dip your finger in the compost, if it comes out clean then give a good watering then leave.
