Parsnip failure

IvyhouseIvyhouse Posts: 111

Everyone of my seemingly healthy parsnip seedlings have been eaten, either by slugs or snails. Is it too late to start again or shall I just re-use the bed for something else ?

Thanks in anticipation.

According to my books May is fine. I use slug pellets, I know they are not organic, but they work. A mini electric feneis said to work.

I put milk containers over mine until they reach the top then take them off, in my garden they don't go for parsnips.

Thanks for the replies folks. I'll sow another batch tomorrow.

They will germinate quickly if you sow them onto damp kitchen paper. Prick out into pots / ground when the leaves show - about 10 days.

This year I have tried sowing in toilet roll inner tubes, in the greenhouse. Germination was good, the tubes have now been thinned one seedling in each and planted the complete tubes out in the plot. Knowing where they are might save them from overenthusiastic hoeing, which I suspect saw off as many seedlings as slugs last year. they look good at the moment!

I usually do the toilet rolls but instead I used the kitchen rolls instead but don't water them just before you plant them out because they will fall apart.
