No new growth on main stems.

I have a couple of house plants which have no new growth on the main body of the plant but are still sprouting at the ends of the stems. What's the problem? Does it just need cut right down?

What type of house plant is it?
Hi, one is an azalea. The other looks like a Kalanchoe but I'm not sure.
